A Learning Society So what are some of the joys of being young today? And some of the challenges too, both in their studies, their work and their families? In Learning Works this week, we hear two commentaries on being young today – one from a senior female student in her final year at school, the other from a young woman who is now entering the workforce, as well as being the South Australian member on the national planning committee for National Youth Week. Also in the program, Tony Ryan interviews a Year 11 student about his life both in and out of school, and speaks to Dr Michael Slocombe, a senior member of staff at Trinity College in Gawler. Hidden Faces Revealed
Hidden Faces Revealed is a Northern Multicultural Youth Mask Exhibition presented by Northern Youth Power in partnership with Primary Health Care Services North Salisbury. Featuring works by children and young people from several African countries including Burundi, this exhibition is currently at Morella Community Centre in Parafield Gardens north of Adelaide. For Learning Works, these interviews were recorded at the launch of the exhibition at Mawson Lakes in March.

Arts, Literature and Music A Good Read – with Sandhya Burton Author Emma McEwin is the great granddaughter of Sir Douglas Mawson, celebrated Antarctic Explorer and familiar face on Australian currency. Her book An Antarctic Affair traces the story of Douglas’ emerging interest in Antarctica and his consequent expeditions to the continent, as well as the key role that Paquita Delprat, his future wife, played in his survival. Learning to read – in prison
Adult Literacy tutors in our prisons report high levels of functional illiteracy – for example, an inability to read a newspaper article. Our guest today, in this Tasmanian-based Learning Works program, is Lois Letchford, a Literacy and Numeracy Educator, working through the Department of Justice in the Prison Service in Tasmania. We hear about the role of Literacy and Numeracy Educators, and how they involve peer tutors to work with other inmates to help them improve their levels of functional literacy and also to undertake simple calculations like multiplication and division. Story-telling – Still Important today!
Continuing with the literacy theme, Tony Ryan also interviewed Tasmanian educator Jenni Connor, about the ongoing importance of storytelling, even in this technological age. Jenni has been National President of the Children’s Book Council of Australia and of the Australian Literacy Educators’ Association and is a member of the Publications Committee for Early Childhood Australia.

Developing Innovation in Young People
Our Learning Work’s guest this week is Guy Claxton, Visiting Professor of the Learning Sciences at the University of Bristol Graduate School of Education. Professor Claxton is the UK’s leading expert on ‘learning to learn’, and on practical ways of developing young people’s learning and creative capacities.
As an academic, he is the author of a dozen well-respected books on the mind, including Hare Brain, Tortoise Mind: Why Intelligence Increases When You Think Less (1997), Wise Up: The Challenge of Lifelong Learning (1999), and The Wayward Mind (2005). He holds degrees from Cambridge and Oxford, and is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and an Academician of the Academy of the Social Sciences.
No mere theorist, Guy Claxton regularly works directly with teachers and schools throughout the UK, as well as overseas. Much in demand as a speaker at education conferences, teachers’ most common reactions to his presentations and workshops are ‘challenging’, ‘inspiring’ and ‘practical’. They appreciate his down-to-earth humour, as well as his eloquence and authority.

Learning Works’ resident film reviewer John J McGowan reviews two current films starring a 12 year old girl with much promise for a great future in films – Abigail Breslin. The two movies are Nim’s Island, and Definitely, Maybe.
