Multi-Literacies: Health Literacy
We’ve all from time to time found ourselves in the emergency ward of a hospital – maybe with sick young children, or as the result of an accident. How do we make sense of what is going on? And what is this experience like for people whose knowledge of spoken or written English is limited. With much emphasis these days on multi-literacies, this week in Learning works, we hear about an important set of skills for all of us to have - best described as health literacy – and the role of adult educators in developing Health Literacy skills in the community.
Our guest is Associate Professor Hermine Scheeres, Co-ordinator of the BA Organisational Learning and the Grad Dip Literacy and Numeracy, at University of Technology Sydney. She is Deputy Chair of the Board of the Faculty of Education, a member of the UTS Equity Reference Committee and Co-editor of the Journal Literacy and Numeracy Studies: an international journal in the education and training of adults.
